Is there like a style guide or something for who’s a lead and who’s supporting in the nominations? It’s weird to me that Hailee Steinfeldt is up for Supporting Actress instead of Actress for True Grit when she’s in every scene in the movie.

Love this guy. He’s super weedy, but native. Grows in my parents’ yard. I used to think this one was the same as Water Hemp, in the genus Amaranthus, but this guy has veins that start from the base of the leaf.
The name is Acalypha rhomboidea. Common Three Seeded Mercury.
Grows everywhere, but in my limited experience with this guy, if you cut it down, it’s pretty much over, but like other Euphorbias, if you just step on it, it’ll repair the damage and grow sideways for a bit. And they prefer shade if I remember correctly.
The brown-red, almost rusty colored centers of the top of the plant are the giveaway. There are amaranths that do this too, but they don’t have the same shape at the top of the plant.
This genus is interesting.
Acalypha gracilens - Slender Mercury
Grows to the south of the Chicago region, and in pretty normal environments. Disturbed sandy soils. Plenty of those, especially down south there. S&W says it’s an upland plant.
Three more in this genus, and then on to the maples!
You’ve gotta start somewhere, this is the first one in Swink and Wilhelm.
Velvetleaf. If you crush the green or brown/black seedpods, the smell is unmistakable.
It’s a weed of disturbed ground and construction sites you played on when you were a kid.
For restoration, it’s not a problem, even though it’s a weed, because you can just cut it and it never comes back.

This has been my EDC for a while now. I usually have another knife on me along with the SAK, but at the time of this picture I didn’t have it on me.

Editor’s Note: Hi Jeff, I would suggest maybe adding a paracord fob to your Victorinox for easier retrieval if that’s an issue (I ended up doing that on my SAKs). I would also maybe say to ditch the S-Biner for either the new S-Biner Ahh or a simple clip from a hardware store or something. You don’t have a lot of weight on the S-Biner so I’m not too worried, though… Otherwise it looks pretty good!
